Handlery Union Square Hotel

Staff was very nice! Location is great had an upgrade to a suite on the 8th floor which was very large and nice. Came with a fridge coffee maker separate bathroom area etc. This is a historic building so don't expect modern rooms but I was happy with the furniture bed desk and amenities. Didn't park here but Uber is very fast to arrive. If here for an event or busy weeeked recommend grabbing an uber an hour or even two before the event as this area can have really bad traffic.

The hotel is nice overall, but it is quite old and you can clearly see that in the rooms. The walls seem to have very poor sound insulation — we could hear the man in the next room coughing as if he was inside our room. The heater was not working properly and we couldn’t really control the temperature. Also, the pool was empty during our stay Our room was also facing the stairwell, so the view was not pleasant and the room felt quite dark. Since we only stayed for one night, our main priorities were safety and location, and the hotel did meet those expectations. However, the rooms definitely need a proper renovation.

Unexpected gem. Historic Hotel. Staff very welcoming, hotel surroundings and our room very clean. We even had a balcony and loved listening to the city life! When you closed the door and drapes, nice an quiet. Super great location to shop Union Square and we walked to Finos Italian restaurant for dinner. One star short due to the construction mess with the pool. However there is a business center, lobby and fitness room. I definitely will remember this place again.

Hotel located 1 min walk to cable cars and 3 min walk to subway system (muni and bart). Area is safe, wheel chair accessible hotel, good wifi good black out curtains. Medium firm beds, clean rooms. Has elevators and also stairs. Close to restaurants and convenience stores. Water fountains available on floors, also hot water for tea or soup! There is coffee in room and fridge, no microwave; restaurant not open, amazing outdoor pool; but under renovation until march 2026! The best part of this hotel is the customer service; specifically Stephanie the night auditor! She provides amazing customer service, the first time we came to this hotel she impressed us! The reason we came back is because of her genuine caring attitude and warmth…she has provided the best customer service i ever experienced anywhere in the USA. Only in Vietnam i had experienced similar or better customer service, hats off to Stephanie.

I stayed at the Handlery Union Square Hotel and had a very pleasant experience. Check-in was smooth, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The building is older and has some historic charm, but my room was clean and comfortable, so I had no issues relaxing there. There is always a staff member at the entrance, which gave me a strong sense of security during my stay. The location is also excellent — right near Union Square, with easy access to shopping, sightseeing, and public transportation. I forgot to ask for a receipt at checkout, but when I emailed the hotel later, they responded quickly and sent it to me without any trouble. Overall, the combination of convenient location, cleanliness, and helpful staff made this a stay I can confidently recommend.

The Handlery Hotel is such a great place to stay in SF. It’s right on Union square, so you’re within walking distance of lots of great restaurants and places to shop. The staff is so friendly, and the rooms are very clean and comfortable. It’s also very quiet in the room, which is great considering you’re steps away from the bustling downtown, so you can enjoy a peaceful night sleep. We’ve stayed here a couple of times and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the city!

The hotel is situated in the city center and is a good place to stay. We spent around six days here during the final leg of our U.S. trip, and overall, Handlery did not disappoint us. There is a parking charge, which is quite high at USD 75 per night—definitely a weak point. However, considering the central location, there isn’t much of an alternative. Another drawback is the absence of a kitchen and breakfast facilities, which is something the hotel management should consider improving. On the positive side, the location is excellent. We found many nearby restaurants, including fast food outlets as well as Indian and Pakistani restaurants, which made dining very convenient. On the last day of our stay, since we were occupying two rooms, we requested a late checkout. Unfortunately, the receptionist initially came across as quite rude, stating that an extra hour would only be possible for an additional charge. After requesting again, she agreed to allow one extra hour but with an unusual condition—that we move all our belongings into one room, despite having booked two rooms. Overall, the stay was comfortable due to the location, but there are a few service and facility aspects that could certainly be improved.

It was a great location (union square) and great price! I got it last minute and everything went so smoothly! I was greeted right when I arrived the front desk is professional and dressed professionally so it gives a luxury feeling, this hotel is historic and you can tell but well maintained. The room was smaller but nice had everything I needed the bathroom was also small but everything was clean. I enjoyed my short time there and it was great and good price!
